POPE BENEDICT XVI OFFICIALLY  OPENS  DOMUS  AUSTRALIA IN  ROME

Bishop Hurley, Bishop of the Diocese of Darwin reported from Rome:   On Wednesday 19th October 2011, Pope Benedict XVI officially opened Australia’s first Pilgrim Centre in Rome, Domus Australia.

Three years ago a group of Australian Dioceses bought the property from the Marist Fathers who established the Pilgrim Centre. In recognition of the support of the Diocese of Darwin, a Wing of Domus Australia has been named after Sr. Anne Gardiner FDNSC. This order has served for over 100 years in the Northern Territory.

In 1953 Sr. Anne was appointed to Bathurst Island and has served there for some 57 years. Greatly loved by the Tiwi people, Sr. Anne has led a lifetime of dedication, living out the Motto of the Sisters, “May the Sacred Heart of Jesus be everywhere Loved”.

Bishop Eugene Hurley Bishop of the Diocese of Darwin was delighted that her dedication would be marked by this significant recognition in Domus Australia. He said “Sr. Anne has made an invaluable contribution to the Community of the Tiwi, alongside her Indigenous brothers and sisters. It is very fitting that her Mission has been given this honour in Australia’s first Pilgrim Centre in Rome”.
