KRAVEN THE HUNTER

US, 2024, 127 minutes, Colour.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Russell Crowe, Arianna DeBose, Fred Hechinger, Alessandro Nivola, Christopher Abbott, Levi Miller, Billy Barratt.

Directed by J.C.Chandor.

Kraven the Hunter was created by veteran Marvel Comics expert, Stan Lee. As the title suggests, he is a Hunter, literally of animals as well as of human beings, a foe of Spiderman.

The Spiderman series was made in collaboration with Marvel Studios by Sony. The Sony Marvel action films have been far less successful than the others, beers, Venom, Madame Webb and, now Kraven. In fact, Sony executives have commented that the press “crucified” Madame Webb as well as Kraven making them financial flops, both in 2024.

And, this is a pity with Kraven because it is actually an action show more than a superpowers show, even though Kraven himself has received the capacity for extraordinary climbs and leaps.

Perhaps the central character is not too sympathetic – although Morbius and Venom are not the most attractive superpower heroes.

The film opens strikingly, a convoy of prisoners in the Russian snow and isolation, a harsh Gulag, and Kraven, a sturdy presence and performance by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, suddenly appearing, killing several gangsters in the prison, escaping in a plane. And then this screenplay goes back to an origins story, 16 years earlier.

There are two young Russian boys in the New York elite school, visited by their father, a big Russian drug dealer played with quite some heft and heaviness by Russell Crowe. He makes demands on his sons, especially the older, Sergei (played here by Australian Levi Miller). On safari in Ghana, the young man is mauled by a lion, allegedly legendary, eventually killed by his father keeping it is a trophy. But, Sergei is saved by a mysterious African young woman, Calypso, with tarot cards and a special potion.

Sergei then becomes Kraven, isolating himself, living in Russia, a Hunter, able to be hired to pursue criminals. But, every year, he comes to New York to visit his brother, now a musician and lounge singer, in New York and some contact with his father.

Then various complications ensue, the abduction of the younger brother, the emergence of an arch-criminal, rivalling the father, Rhino (Alessandro Nivola who also has had some strange injections and, unless tempered, his skin becomes like that of a rhinoceros). He also hires a killer, The Foreigner (Christopher Abbott) who can mesmerise his opponents through gazing at them and overpowering them.

What follows is action adventure, the kind that Liam Neeson and other actors used to get involved in, scenes in Turkey, Russia, a rescue for the younger brother, double Cross, Calypso (Ariana DeBose) to the rescue… And a final confrontation with the father. And the importance for Kraven to establish his own moral code.

Which means then that the scenario is ready for an action adventure with Kraven and a confrontation with Spiderman.

  1. Kraven and his place in marvel comics, as a hunter in himself, and the conflicts with Spiderman? This film is an origin story for Kraven?

Gladiator II

gladiator 2

GLADIATOR II

US, 2024, 148 minutes, Colour.

Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Connie Neilson, Joseph Quinn, Fred Hechinger, Lior Raz, Derek Jacobi, Matt Lucas, Tim McInerny.

Directed by Ridley Scott.

While sequels are often welcomed by an audience, they also often find it difficult to maintain the standard of the original film. Which is the case here. Gladiator won the Oscar for Best Picture in 2000 as well as an Oscar for Russell Crowe in his role as the strong Roman warrior, Maximus. She is one was a triumph for prolific director, Ridley Scott.

It was something of a surprise when plans were made over 20 years later for this sequel. The focus is on the son of Maximus who died in the first film, his son with Lucilla, the daughter of Marcus Aurelius. He is Lucius, played by Paul Mescal, seen first quietly living in North Africa, the Romans attacking under the leadership of General Acacius, Pedro Pascal, the North Africans defeated, taken to Rome, sold as slaves, many commandeered as gladiators.

Audiences will see the parallel scenario with the original film, the provinces, Roman warfare, prisoners, slavery, the Colosseum, gladiators, harsh life, brutality in the arena, political intrigue.

As with the original film, Gladiator II looks quite spectacular, special effects, naval battle sequences, extraordinary fights in the Colosseum especially against monstrous effect monster monkeys, and the recreation of a battle sequence in the Colosseum. Many of these scenes are very violent, and some of them exceedingly brutal in the impact. Sometimes we might wonder, as we watch the brutality of the fights and audience excitement that we are very much like these vicious Romans and their control of human life with thumbs down.

As with the Emperor, Commodus in the original film, there are two rather despicable emperors this time, the twins Geta and Caracalla (Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger) as symbols of the decline of the Roman Empire. Returning from the original film is Connie Neilson as Lucilla, daughter of Marcus Aurelius, mother of Lucius, recognising him, trying to make contact, eventually sacrificing herself for him. She is also in a relationship with General Acacius. One of the difficulties for the impact of the drama is that while Paul Mescal is exceedingly serious and single-minded as Lucius, he is not charismatically engaging for the audience a little in here and charm, while Pedro Pascal as Acacius does have leadership charism.

But, the big difference for this drama is the presence of Denzel Washington as the former slave with political and power ambitions, based on an actual character, Macrinus, a master in buying slaves, controlling the gladiators, with entree to the Emperor’s, deals with corrupt senators, waiting for his power grab moments, unscrupulous with his violence, even with the Emperors.

Given the limitations, the repetitions in parallels with the original, and the single-minded sternness of Paul Mescal as Lucius, audiences who enjoy Roman epics, will enjoy Gladiator II as well.

  1. The impact of the original film? Its legacy? So many years for a sequel? The continuity? The scenario of the first parallel scenario of the sequel?
  2. The work of Ridley Scott, epics? And audience response?
  3. The settings, North Africa, the city, the battles, the Navy, the Roman conquest? The road to Rome? The entry? The Colosseum, the quarters for the gladiators? The animals? The use of the Colosseum, fights, naval battles? The royal palace? Homes? The market for gladiators? The musical score?
  4. The links with the original, the mentions of Maximus, the flashbacks and the appearance of Russell Crowe? Connie Neilson as Lucilla, her relationship with Maximus, with, discovering with Lucius? Derek Jacoby as the senator?
  5. Africa, Lucius and his life there, relationship with his wife, warrior, silent about his identity, the local authorities, the attack of the Romans, the details of the battles, strategies, defeat? Imprisonment? The death of his wife, seeing her pass into the next life, grief?
  6. The prisoners going to Rome, the entrance to the city, the legions and the triumphant entry, general Acacius, his relationship to Lucilla, his tribute to the Senate, their suspicions, their wanting him to go on further conquests? His own response, with Lucilla, his significance in the revolt against Rome, his legions at Ostia, the sending of the message, his being trapped, sparing Lucius, his own death? Lucilla’s grief?
  7. The role of Macrinus, dented Washington’s presence, slave, freed, ambitions for the Senate, ruling Rome? The auctions of slaves, seeing Lucy is in action, his talents, strength, perseverance, purchase? His master of slaves and the treatment of the slaves? The training, the accommodation in the below the Colosseum? The fight in the Colosseum, the monstrous monkeys and battles, UCS and his survival? The response of the crowds, the emperors, thumbs up?
  8. The personality of Lucy is, silent about his identity, his anonymity in Africa, his relationship, the defeat, the death of his wife? With the other slaves? With the master of slaves, his being tested? With Macrinus? With Lucilla, her visit, his identity, his resistance? His eventually changing, the encounter with Acacius, the fight in the arena, spared, acacias death?
  9. The background of the emperors, their status, twins, effete life, games, the court, the worms? The attitude of the Senators? Acacius? Macrinus and his setting them up, the death of Geta?
  10. Arrow colour, wilfulness, childish, nominating his monkey as senator?

Thelma

THELMA

US, 2024, 98 minutes, Colour.

June Squibb, Fred Hechinger, Richard Roundtree, Parker Posey, Clark Gregg, Malcolm McDowell.

Directed by Joshua Marston.

Lyricist Johnny Mercer once wrote “you’re either too young or too old…”. Here is a tale about a 94 year-old, a lot of it tongue-in-cheek, a lot of it quite hopeful, the proof that she is not too old.

She is a grandmother, Thelma, played by 94-year-old actress, June Squibb, a veteran character actress here getting a starring role. Her loving husband has died, she is living alone, but happily reliant at times on her grandson, Daniel (Fred Hechinger), genial, hert confidante, helping her when she is busy on her computer. They watch television and Thelma has a soft spot for Tom Cruise doing his own stunts in the Mission Impossible films.

Daniel is 24, thinks that he is not good at anything much, has a fussy overprotective mother, Parker Posey, and a demanding father (Clark Gregg) who is rigid in his interpretation of obligations.

However, the core of the story is one that will resonate with older audiences (and younger audiences who have been victims), the scam. Thelma receives a phone call, a voice impersonating Daniel, a plea for ransom money, her going to the bank, withdrawing it, posting it – and then the realisation of the scam.

Thelma is both humiliated and annoyed, and decides to take the matter in hand, relying on an old friend, Ben (Richard Roundtree, merely 80, Shaft himself over 50 years earlier, his last feature film). They form a very genial screen couple, June Squibb doing her own stunts – though they are mainly on a scooter with Ben, racing through the streets of LA. She also borrows a gun from another elderly housebound friend!

The enjoyment of the film is watching June Squibb, the actress enjoying herself in this role, entering into it wholeheartedly. Daniel is a sympathetic character and we like Ben. Not so much the fusy parents, very irritating!

And there is a cameo from Malcolm McDowell (only 82) as the villain.

What might be called an enjoyable action romp and an affirmation of grey power!

  1. Thelma, June Squibb, aged 94, her screen presence and performance?
  2. Themes of age and ageing, transcending age limits? Her fondness of looking at Tom Cruise and his stunts, Mission Impossible?
  3. Alma, her story, background of her long marriage, sadness at the death of her husband, living alone, managing, her daily routines? Her bond with her grandson, his care for her, conversations, driving? Her daughter fussing, stripped, her son-in-law and his ideas and mouthing them?
  4. The importance of Thelma working on the computer, older audiences identifying with her, the help from Daniel? The later use of the skills?
  5. The phone call, the impersonation of her grandson, the ransom, the phone connection, the directions, going to the bank, withdrawing the money, posting it? Her later finding the address?
  6. The situation and her determination, the strategy, going to the aged care home, visiting Ben, the bonds in the past, their mutual friends, regrets at deaths? The production of Annie and his role? Is Scooter, Thelma, it, the chase through the hospital, out into the streets, his decision, to get back for the performance, riding through the city, his exasperation is, their getting lost, separation, her falling, his coming to help her up (and his story about learning how to lift patients)? They’re persevering, finding the address?
  7. Visiting miner, living alone, old-age, memories, and Thelma getting the gun?
  8. Daniel, his age, self-image, not capable of doing things, the bond with his grandmother? His parents, the fuzziness, comments, protectiveness?
  9. The issue of film are being lost, her alarm and her removal? The family coming to the aged care Centre, the two interrogating the family, sympathy, comic touches? The Detective and the interviews? The family staying, anxious?
  10. Thelma and the service station, the photo, turning up on Daniel’s phone, tracking her down, the pursuit, his driving (without the licence despite his father), arriving, Thelma throwing the alarm over the fence, getting away?
  11. At the post office, following Michael, the shop, the owner, the antiques, the setup for the scam? The confrontation, denials, Thelma being funded, pulling the gun, the hearing aid contact with Ben, Michael escaping, bend tripping him? The confrontation with the owner, the computer, Thelma drawing on her skills, contact with Daniel, the transfer and success?
  12. Reconciliation with the family, affirmation of Daniel, arriving back for the performance of any? The bond with Ben?
