THE LADY TAKES A FLYER
US, 1958, 94 minutes, Colour.
Lana Turner, Jeff Chandler, Richard Denning, Chuck Connors.
Directed by Jack Arnold.
The Lady Takes a Flyer was one of many similar romantic melodramas/ comedies of the late 150s from Universal Studios. It was directed by Jack Arnold, whose films range from interesting horror The Incredible Shrinking Man to comedies Bachelor in Paradise (again with Lana Turner) and the British classic The Mouse that Roared.
Jeff Chandler had been very popular at Universal Studios in many films during the '50s and at this time was cast in a great number of similar films with the leading ladies of the day, June Allyson, Susan Hayward, and Lana Turner was making her transition from star at M.G.M. Studios to a prominent performer in Universal's soap operas: Portrait in Black, Imitation of Life etc.
The film has a seemingly improbable background - the romance and marriage of two flyers whose careers clash and who stage a professional battle of the sexes. There are lush backgrounds, an affluent atmosphere - and the popular material that is generally styled 'a woman's picture'. Improbable - but entertaining in its way.
