PUBLIC FORUM, SYDNEY: ANZAC, WHY DOES IT LAST?

Public Forum

5 August 2014

Topic: ‘Anzac – why does it last?’

Speaker: Prof Joan Beaumont (Strategic and Defence Studies Centre, ANU) author of Broken Nation: Australians in the Great War

With Anzac Centenary and the ‘cacophony of ceremonies’ about to begin, Prof Joan Beaumont urges us to differentiate between history and memory. “The emphasis on Gallipoli and the Anzac legend” she says “has really been part of our political culture. It is not part of history. All commemoration tells us more about the present, than it does the past. All commemoration is inherently political." Join us to explore the question ‘Anzac – why does it last?’ A Q&A session with follow Prof Beaumont’s address.

Event co-hosted by Centre for Peace and Conflict Studies, Global Social Justice Network and Gallipoli Centenary Peace Campaign
