Fr Frank Andersen msc

Frank Andersen MSC, a Queenslander, made his first profession on February 26^th 1961. During his seminary years, he taught at Daramalan College, Canberra, and continued there after his ordination in August 1968. He spent over ten years teaching in the primary school.

While at Daramalan, Frank began to compose hymns, scripturally-based, for congregational singing and published Eagle’s Wings.

In 1980, Frank spent a year at Berkeley, California, at the Jesuit Centre, specialising in Liturgy, and liturgical participation. On his return from the US, he continued with hymns and a new collection, Everything I Possess. He also wrote music especially for Liturgical use, Scripture in Song, Rising Moon.

In 1990, Frank became a member of the Parish team based in Sunshine, in Melbourne, but travelling all over Australia. This ministry also led to collaborative work in Australia and overseas with the Christian Brothers.

Another collection of hymns was Kindly Light. Frank also published the books, Jesus Our Story and Making the Eucharist Matter.

Br James Maher msc

Br James Maher James Maher msc RIP was a Missionary of the Sacred Heart Brother, best known for his song ‘Woman of the Sacred Heart’. James was born in 1963 and was professed as an MSC Brother in 1995. Originally from Maitland NSW, he worked as a teacher and a High School chaplain, and in the late 1990s formed the Chevalier Institute with Julie Taylor and Bob Irwin.

James released three albums: Heartvoice, Gospel of Love and Hidden Within the World as well as a Mass Setting “Mass of the Sacred Heart”. Each album draws on James’ devotion to heart spirituality and in his own words “Songs are poems with wings! Words carried on the wings of a melody can enter the heart very directly. They can touch the heart, speak to the heart, and evoke a response from the heart.“ James also wrote school songs for the MSC Colleges.

James died peacefully on 6 December 2015 after a long period of illness with cancer.

Fr Paul McCormack msc

paul maccormack resize Paul McCormack M.S.C. was ordained to the priesthood in 1979. Since then his ministry has been in education, particularly at Downlands College, Toowoomba. Paul is a musician and composer of liturgical hymns. Teaching in a boarding school has given him the opportunity to try out his compositions with the students over the years. This has resulted in the production of two recordings of hymns suitable for congregational participation. They are entitled, “Hymns for the Hard Road” and “Strong in Faith”. Paul’s hymns are almost exclusively based on scriptural themes and prayers inspired by the spirituality of the heart of Christ.

The colleges conducted by the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Australia all have as their motto the Latin phrase, “Fortes in fide.” This translates as “Strong in Faith”. Paul’s music is inspired by this idea as expressed in the Psalms and Sacred Scripture.

Presently, Paul is the assistant parish priest at Henley Beach in Adelaide. He is chaplain at the local De La Salle College, St. Michael’s.
