Memory tribute to Maurie Griffin MSC from Terry Herbert

MAURIE GRIFFIN, MSC 06 / 7 / 1997 Anniversary
Maurie was our Religion Teacher at Chevalier in our Leaving Year,1956. Our Year was a pretty bright lot, with the exception of a few of us, and Maurie’s gentle patience was mistaken by some as a “soft touch”. So the fellas conjured-up the hardest moral problems they could …. but the harder the question, the better Maurie relished answering it .. “wellll …..” … and that took-up most of the Class time.
Later, at St Paul’s I was privileged to have Maurie for Moral Theology in 1970/71. It was then that the “penny dropped” for me. Maurie was offering us a new (then) approach to Moral Theology; no longer starting from a sterile “laundry list” of sins and moral laws, but a personal relationship with Jesus, as offered by Bernard Haring, and others.
Thank You Maurie, for the profound help you continue to be in my ministry, relationships and the sacrament of reconciliation.
