From the Foreword to the book, Stephen Hackett MSC.

During Lent in 2013, parishioners of St Thomas the Apostle Parish at Camp Hill in Brisbane participated in a scriptural Lenten program. After Easter, a group of these parishioners asked if they might continue the journey they had begun with the Scriptures, and so began the search for a suitable program. When none was found, the Scripture-in-Parish program Hearts burning within us was devised to meet the need.

The author of the program, Fr Peter Malone MSC, was asked to prepare a structured resource that would be readily accessible to participants. From the outset, it was intended that “Hearts burning within us” could be used by a group without requiring the presence of a priest or someone who had studied the Scriptures. Where questions arose that could not be answered during a session, these could be referred for answer at a subsequent session which a priest or other suitable person might be invited to attend.

The words “Hearts burning within us” come from the gospel account of the two disciples walking with the Risen Jesus on the road to Emmaus and describes their experience as Jesus opened the Scriptures to them that were about himself (Luke 24:13-35). It picks up the two foundational elements of the program: a personal encounter with the Risen Jesus who speaks to us in the Scriptures, and an opening up of the Scriptures so as to better understand what we are reading.
