One hundred years ago, Father Francis Xavier Gsell MSC arrived in Darwin. His arrival followed two earlier missionary efforts to establish the Catholic Church in the Northern Territory, where the diocese of ‘Victoria’ had been established as early as the 1840s. The first missionary to work in the Northern Territory was Don Angelo Confalonieri, who arrived in the remote settlement of Victoria at Port Essington in 1846, only to die two years later. In 1882 the Jesuits attempted a second missionary endeavour in 1882 in Darwin, but had to withdraw in 1902. In 1904, the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart were entrusted with the responsibility for the Church in the Northern Territory and Father Gsell as appointed as Apostolic Administrator. Over the next few months there will be a number of celebrations to mark the 75th anniversary of the foundation of the Mission of Eastern Papua - today the Diocese of Alotau, Papua New Guinea.

The Australian MSC Province was erected on December 8th 1905, with Father Pierre Marie Treand as the first provincial. The Centenary of the foundation of the province was marked by a Eucharist and Celebratory Dinner at Kensington. The principal celebrant of the Mass in the Church of Our Lady of the Rosary, Kensington, was the current provincial, Father Timothy Brennan, who also preached the occasional homily. After the Mass the gathering enjoyed a Dinner in the grounds of the Sacred Heart Monastery, Kensington. The former Chief Justice of the High Court of Australia, Sir Gerald Brennan gave the occasional address. Among the official guests were the former Archbishop of Sydney, Edward Cardinal Clancy and the Governor of New South Wales, Dr Marie Bashir.

It’s not everyday a school can boast that one of their Year 12 students competed on the world stage at the Commonwealth Games. However, this is exactly what Daramalan can lay claim to with 2006 Year 12 student Lauren Boden competing in the 400 metre Hurdles at Melbourne last year. The recently elected Superior General of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart will be a special guest at the Gsell Centenary Celebrations in Darwin. Father Mark, an American, was elected to his office of leadership of the worldwide MSC Society at the General Chapter in Rome in September 2005. He is the first American to hold this office. 


Father Mark will arrive in Australia on 14th July. Prior to the Darwin celebrations he will spend some weeks visiting the various communities of the Australian Province. Although he has visited the Australian province before, this will be his first official visit as Superior.

As we celebrate the 100th anniversary of the arrival of F. X. Gsell and of the ministry of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in the Northern Territory, today’s liturgy offers us a powerful icon of these events in the person of the prophet Elijah and in his journey through the desert to Mount Horeb.
